Sensei Paul began his training in the martial arts in 1985. Inspired by the life story of Mas Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin Karate, Sensei Paul started at Newtown Dojo under Sensei Dave Downes attaining his blackbelt in 1992.
Competing nationally and internationally, he won the New Zealand championships 4 times over three catergories, middle, light heavy weight, and heavy weight. Representing New Zealand at three world championships, Sensei Paul moved to Japan to widen his training and pursue the competition circuit there.
Residing in Tokyo for 18 years, Sensei Paul trained and instructed under Shihan Eguchi at Josai Kokubunji Dojo. Returning to Wellington in 2019, he now instructs the Lower Hutt Kyokushin karate club under the current rank of 4th dan.

Kyokushin Karate, perhaps the most widely practiced karate in Japan, carries a profound significance reflected in its very name. Founded by the legendary Masutatsu Oyama, Kyokushin translates to "Ultimate Truth," encapsulating the essence of this dynamic discipline. Oyama sought to create a martial art that not only embodied practical self-defense but also delved into intense physical training and spiritual development.
The fusion of traditional Japanese karate elements with Oyama's innovations birthed Kyokushin, distinguished by its commitment to contact sparring and rigorous conditioning. Since its establishment in the 1960s, Kyokushin has transcended borders, resonating globally with practitioners drawn to its holistic approach. It stands as a living testament to the pursuit of the "Ultimate Truth" — a journey that combines effective self-defense, physical prowess, and a profound exploration of mental and spiritual strength. Join us on this historical odyssey through Kyokushin Karate, where tradition meets transformation, and the pursuit of ultimate truth unfolds.
